Can Mahr / Dowry Be Paid in Installments?

Mahr doesn’t always have to be paid all at once, it can be spread out over time.

In some communities, especially wealthier ones, expectations around dowry can be quite high. For example, offering something like $20,000 might actually be considered low in certain circles.

Because of this, it’s accepted that a man might not be able to pay the full amount upfront. Instead, he can agree to pay it in installments. For instance, he might pay part of it now and then continue paying the rest annually over several years.

However, once a mahr is agreed upon, it becomes a binding debt.

That means:

• If the couple divorces before the full amount is paid, the remaining balance is still owed.

• If the husband dies, the unpaid dowry is treated as a debt and must be paid from his estate before any inheritance is distributed.

The dowry isn’t just a symbolic gift. It’s a financial obligation that must be fulfilled, regardless of changes in the marriage.
