“Historically speaking, the reason why Islamic scholarship flourished was not due to the state but because of endowments (Waqf). That’s why scholarship remained independent. However, after colonialism, in the last 150 years, the Awqaf were taken over by the State and thus became dependent on the government. As a result, scholars could no longer speak their minds.” ~ Shaykh Yasir Qadhi
