On Objective Morality

Without God, humans are left with only subjective opinions about what is moral and what is not. If there is no God and the universe is merely an accident, then life lacks any inherent meaning, and no one can claim with certainty that anything is truly right or wrong (moral or immoral) Consider two atheists. Both believe that the world is an accident and, as a result, must create their own purpose in life. One atheist decides that his purpose is to feed the poor because he finds joy in seeing the happiness his actions bring. The other, however, believes that since life is meaningless, his greatest purpose is to murder low IQ individuals because it brings him the most pleasure. The atheist who feeds the poor has no objective moral foundation (God) to claim that the actions of the murderous atheist are truly wrong. Without God, both are merely relying on their subjective opinions of morality. Neither can ground their morality objectively. In Islam, we are taught that human beings have an innate, God given moral compass that guides them. However, they also possess desires and impulses, known in Arabic as nafs (such as greed, lust, envy, anger, jealousy etc..), which, if left unchecked, can corrupt this moral compass. The Qur’an and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) provide guidance on how to overcome these spiritual diseases of the heart. If a person willingly submits to God and follows His guidance by adhering to the teachings of His prophets and revelations (the final one being the Qur’an), their innate moral compass is strengthened. This enables them to control their desires and spiritual diseases if the heart, leading to inner peace. In this way, a human being can attain a status even greater than that of angels, as they use their God given free will to obey their Creator. Angels, by contrast, do not possess free will and have no choice but to obey God. However, if a person chooses to reject the Creator’s guidance and instead allows their desires to dominate them, they can often fall to the lowest depths of depravity. Sometimes becoming even worse than demons. If, on the other hand, a person refuses to follow God’s guidance but still acts kindly towards others, refrains from oppression, and helps many people, such an individual will be rewarded by God for their goodness in this temporary world because God is just. However, once their soul leaves their body and enters the afterlife, they will not receive any reward. Due to their arrogance in disbelief, they may face eternal damnation.
