Signs on the Shore: Gaza’s Grief, the Whale, and the Seerah

Just found out this incident that recently occurred in Gaza also happened to the Sahaba (May Allah be pleased with them all). This hadith describes a jihad campaign led by Abu ‘Ubaida under the command of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The group had very limited food, only one date per person each day, which they sucked for sustenance and drank water. During their journey, they reached the sea and discovered a massive dead sea creature called al-‘Anbar (a type of whale). Since they were extremely hungry, Abu ‘Ubaida judged it permissible to eat it, as they were on a mission for Allah and in need of food. They lived off the whale for a month, even becoming healthy and strong again. Its size was enormous. Abu ‘Ubaida measured one of its ribs by making thirteen men sit inside the cavity of its eye, and a camel could pass under its rib when it was stood up. When they returned to Medina, they informed the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who confirmed that it was lawful (halal) provision from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also ate from a piece of the whale they brought back. Allah provides sustenance in unexpected ways, especially during hardship.
