The Habaib of Yemen: Traders, Scholars, and Spreaders of Islam.

As honorable traders, they played an instrumental role in spreading Islam across many parts of Africa and Asia. Their early lineage can be traced back to a scholar who established their tribe as people of the Qur’an, rather than people of political power. This scholar declared: “We will break the sword and renounce worldly politics. From now on, this tribe will not seek power or positions; we will be people of the Qur’an.” They upheld this principle, earning their living through trade (tijara), in line with the Prophet’s teaching that “Nine-tenths of provision (rizq) comes from trade.”

This combination of trade and da’wah (spreading the message of Islam) proved to be effective. Wherever they went, they earned a living while simultaneously spreading Islam. For example, they introduced Islam to East Africa, where entire communities embraced the faith because of their influence. Similarly, they played a significant role in spreading Islam to regions like Indonesia and Malaysia.

The new generation of Baa’lawi scholars has been nicknamed “The Beloved Ones” in recent times, reflecting their reputation and dedication.
