Yemen’s Jihad Against The Communists

This took place during the period when the Communists had control over Yemen. There are many stories that highlight the strength of faith displayed in the face of this regime, particularly how the Habāʾib stood up to the Communists. Under the Communist rule, any visible display of religion was harshly suppressed. They constantly attacked religious leaders, condemning their actions. The Communists justified their actions by saying that wealth confiscation and redistribution were necessary, but the religious leaders opposed this, arguing that it was unjust.

The people of Tarim were especially vocal in their opposition to the Communist regime. The Communists, who were atheists, even erected signs that read “No Voice But the Party’s Voice” emphasizing that no voice should be louder than the Communist Party’s. Years later, after the Communists were expelled from Yemen, Habib Muhammad hosted a class in the same square where that sign had once been displayed. He pointed out how, at one time, the Communist Party had claimed that no voice would be louder than theirs, but now, the voice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Lord echoed through the same alleyways.

There are many stories of the Habāʾib showing courage in the face of persecution. One tale tells of a Habib who defied the Communist authorities, despite being warned not to wear traditional religious clothing. He walked through the streets in his garments, which were reminiscent of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) attire. The authorities arrested him, tied him to the back of a car, and dragged him through the streets, all the while he cried out “Allahu Akbar” until he passed out. These acts of defiance were not isolated; the religious scholars in Tarim stood firm in the face of Communist oppression.

During this time, many religious institutions in Tarim, including the oldest school in the region, were forced to close. The scholars would hide books and materials related to Islamic studies and sneak into homes at night to continue their learning. Despite the persecution, they remained committed to keeping the spirit of religion alive. Allah, in His wisdom, witnessed their dedication, and now their teachings of Islam are flourishing worldwide.
