Shaykh Shadee Elmasry on using drugs like ayahuasca / DMT in order to have spiritual experiences.
“Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem (In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.) So, a lot of people are talking about this use of drugs. What is it called? Ayahuasca? Whatever the drug is, it doesn’t make a difference. They are claiming that they are having visions of the Sahaba (companions of the Prophet Muhammad, PBUH), Ahlul Bayt (the family of the Prophet Muhammad, PBUH), and even Allah (God) Himself.
Well, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Allah is pure, and He only accepts that which is pure.’ The Quran also states, ‘God only accepts from the pious.’ You will never access true spiritual heights or openings through something that is disliked, let alone forbidden. This is not how it works. Anything anyone sees after taking drugs, put it aside. Don’t rely upon it—it’s nothing if you use some kind of drug to access it.
Especially quoting some kind of zindiq (a person who falsely claims to be Muslim while spreading harmful ideas) who used a drug—this is darkness upon darkness at this point. First, you’re using a zindiq who took a drug to claim he had some sort of spiritual experience, and some people are actually believing this. Are you nuts? It’s never going to happen.
True spiritual experiences are only accessed after taqwa (following Allah’s guidance by doing good and avoiding the prohibited). But even then, it’s never a goal; it’s just something that happens to a person. It comes to a person—it’s never the goal.
What did Ibn Ata and other ulama (Islamic scholars) say about karamat (miracles that Allah allows one to witness and experience)? You’re not supposed to tell people about it; you should keep it to yourself. Let alone preaching about a drug and trying to sell it.”
