When you register your nikkah / marriage, it doesn’t really protect the man or woman. Imagine an affluent woman—she has a business, savings, successful—and she married for whatever reason a guy who’s not as financially stable.
Once the marriage is registered, unless there’s a prenup, she’s at risk. Her assets are at risk. Once it’s in the civil courts, things get messy, and people can exploit the system. The law might say one thing, but it doesn’t mean it’s just under the sight of Allah. You don’t have a right to someone’s wealth just because the law says so.
I’ve seen it all—men coming to me saying their wives took everything, and women saying the same about their husbands. It’s abused on both sides, but men are more often the ones hurt by it.
