These clips against Shaykh Hamza Yusuf are unfair due to the following reasons:
A) Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is encouraging kuffar that are open-minded when it comes to Hinduism & Buddhism to look into Islam & study the life of The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
B) The Kuffar as a general category are in hell. The Muslims as a general category are in heaven. However, some Muslims might enter hell due to unrepentant sins. They will enter hell until they are purified & some non-Muslims might end up in heaven because they were not given the message of Islam at all or they were given a distorted version.
C) As we know from the Qur’an the only PATH acceptable to Allah is Islam (willful submission to The Creator) However a person’s salvation is with Allah. Allah knows best where a particular person will end up. The Scholars of Islam say that the only individual beings we are allowed to say with CERTAINTY will be in the fire of hell are :
• Shaytan (The devil)
• Fir’awn
• The Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ arch nemesis
& uncle Abu Lahab
These are explicitly mentioned in the Quran. As for everyone else who died in a PATH of Kufr like Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Atheism, Buddhism etc then the maximum we can say as Muslims is that they died in a path of kufr but the ultimate discretion as to their salvation or damnation is with Allah alone.
The kafir in the sight of Allah is the one who understood in his heart that Islam was the truth and rejected it out of arrogance. Imam Al Ghazali RH said a person who died on a path of kufr will have an excuse with Allah if in this life he was never introduced to the message of Islam or was presented with a distorted version of Islam and rejected that distorted version.
D) Some hadith mention that God sent 124,000 Prophets to humanity. Only 25 of those are mentioned in the Qur’an. Some scholars from the past have speculated as to whether Buddha could have been one of them. Shaykh Hamza Yusuf wrote an essay explaining why some scholars from the past said this. You can read that essay here (bit.ly/3yLytJB) on page 113. Even if true, this does not mean the Buddhas teachings supersede the guidance (Sharia) of the last Prophet sent by God to humanity, The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
E) Shaykh Hamza Yusuf has explicitly rejected the idea of perennialism. He says so in this video:
